Welcome Alexandria of Midland Candle Co to the journal today!

My name is Alexandria Wade, I just moved from the midwest to Portland, Oregon! I make soy candles for to bring home and high spirits wherever you go. They have inspirational messages for your everyday and we hope to expand soon! ;) My dad taught me how to make candles, then I went on my own way experimenting and trying out soy wax. It's been a fun and exciting ride, even though we've only been in business since September! We hope to open up a new site and add in some extra products this holiday season!

What makes you want to create? What keeps you going?:

For me, I work in the business world and I love it! But I needed something a little more. I needed a space I could create, with my hands, and put some of my business experience / ideas into practice. I wanted to be able to try new ideas and have a little control over a small business of my own. This was my answer and it created an opportunity for me to give back to others with inspiration and encouragement. That's the part that keeps me inspired and excited. Knowing I can create a product that can brighten someone's day.

What has been the most challenging part of your business?:

The most challenging part has definitely been managing every thing. Starting your own business by yourself is no small feat. From process on the business side of things to creating the product to packaging and shipping - it can get so overwhelming. I've been working on my processes and minimizing anything that isn't necessary. It's so difficult though!

What advice do you have for other, perhaps newer, makers?:

I think my piece of advice would be one - just start making / selling / doing! Seriously, if you're making a quality product you love and there's a market for the opportunities and buyers will come! I am by no means selling thousands of dollars of products, but I've already met so many amazing people (including the Higgins!). My second piece of advice would be to do your best with what you have but understand it's not going to be perfect. More than likely you aren't going to have a huge budget so you're going to have to do what you can with what you have. First priority should be to make a quality product, then work to create a space where people can find you and know who / what you are about (a website and social media), and then work to create a quality experience for your buyers from customer service to packaging. It may be messy, you may not always get it right, but it will slowly get there - just do your best! It's all you can do!

Anything else you'd like to share with our readers?:

A side note to my mentioning creating a quality space, there are SO many free and cheap resources for makers and creators. You can create a decent website with a theme and woocommerce or Etsy. You can use the free version of Mailchimp, you probably won't have 5,000 subscribers right off the bat (if you do then props to you!). Start an email list, find reasonably priced classes you can use (Hey Sweet Pea, Merriewether Council Blog for Etsy users), and read A LOT! Read all those saved pins with business tips. They will help you! Take notes, just grow your knowledge as much as you can and allow your business to flow naturally from your work and effort.
