ERICA OF FOUR BIRDS BEAUTY.
We are pleased to introduce Erica of Four Birds Beauty to the journal today! Erica is a not only a maker of bath & beauty products, but she also hand-illustrates all her own labels! Read more about her and her business below:
My name is Erica Root, I'm a proud wife and mama of two and absolutely love making, creating, getting my hands dirty, and mostly love how happy I am when I'm being creative. I have always been obsessed with art. Ever since I could pick up a pencil, drawing was my favorite creative outlet. As an adult I also enjoyed exploring new crafts and hobbies, usually to give as gifts for the holidays. Once I discovered the art of making bath and body products, I fell in love! There's something so wonderful about knowing exactly what's going into the products you use on your family, yourself and that you give as gifts. I then decided to merge my passion for drawing with my love of making these products to create Four Birds Beauty. By illustrating all of the labels and tags, I can combine these two things that I love so much to create a truly unique product line.
What makes you want to create? What keeps you going?:
When I'm not creating I just feel off kilter; like something is missing. Being creative isn't so much a choice for me as it is a part of who I am. I love getting positive feedback from what I do because when you are sharing your passion with someone else and they love it, they are essentially loving a part of who you are. It's such a great feeling and really motivates me to keep trying new formulas, label designs and product ideas.
What has been the most challenging part of your business?:
I would definitely say the hardest part of running a small business is time management. As a mom and wife who still works a full time job, sometimes by the end of the day I just want to collapse on the bed! But knowing how good it feels to get that creative energy out and how awesome it feels to get that order notification email, I'm always encouraged to keep on pushing through!
What advice do you have for other, perhaps newer, makers?
Well, I'm still fairly new at this myself, but I'd say the best piece of advice I've gotten and try to follow is to always be willing to reevaluate what you're doing and be open to criticism! It can be really discouraging sometimes when you're working really hard but the orders aren't coming in. If things aren't going well, take a step back, ask for advice and be open to the idea of change. Sometimes a small tweak to your process can make a world of difference.
