MELODY OF MELMARIA DESIGNS.
We are excited to welcome Melody of Melmaria Designs to the blog! We meet a lot of makers through our hashtag #waketomake, but when we met Melody, we were blown away by the creativity & beauty of her pieces. We are happy to introduce you to her & give you some background on her story as a Maker!
I’m Melody Fulone, and I'm the founder, designer, and artist of Melmaria Designs - a shop where I strive to create wearable and gift-worthy products for individuals, trendsetters, and fashion lovers. I currently live in Manchester, NH, in a little apartment with all my yarn, fabric, and ideas.
Melmaria Designs is all about cultivating your individual style - providing quality, originality, and unique. completely handmade pieces you won't find anywhere else. I specialize in fine crochet jewelry, but I like to offer hand-knitted and crocheted accessories now and then as well.
I've been crocheting since I was a child, and haven't really put down my crochet hook in years. As my skills developed and I began thinking about selling my own products, I noticed many handmade items in my field on the market today that are poorly made using cheap materials. I was embarrassed for my craft, and decided to do something about it! Crochet doesn't have to be clunky or ugly - it has the ability to translate beautifully to modern design. This venture became a fascination, and I haven't been able to stop.
What makes you want to create? What keeps you going?
The idea of making something from scratch with my own two hands is one of the most magical concepts to me. Ever since I was young, I have loved learning handicrafts and creating my own designs. It's almost an addiction - whenever I try to stop or take a break, I have to go back to it almost instantly. It's especially true for knitting & crochet - taking a single strand of fiber and weaving it into shapes and fabrics using a hook or a pair of needles is just amazing to me. My friends have affectionately referred to me as The Spider, and I take that as a high compliment. ;)
What has been the most challenging part of your business or of making in general?
Figuring out who I am, and what I'm best at. I went from selling bags made from vintage ribbons, to knit & crochet accessories, to artwork, to fine crochet jewelry. I loved making all of those things, but I think jewelry is where I'll stay for a while. Time is definitely another challenge - in addition to creating each of my pieces by hand, I do all my own photography, editing, listing, and marketing. I work a full-time job outside of Melmaria Designs that requires most of my daytime, so the shop & blog get postponed until the evenings or a rare day off. I'm learning to use every minute of the day wisely, but it's tough!
What advice do you have for other, perhaps newer, makers?
Keep making! Write down all your ideas, and go back to them when you're out of inspiration. Learn a new skill, and cultivate the ones you're good at. Always persevere - you never know where your hard work might take you. And remember that things take time and not everything happens overnight, even in the instant world of social media we live in. If you work hard and stay consistent, you'll accomplish good things!
